Behind the Scenes on Gilbeys Gin - "Alcatraz"

SHOT 8 - in the cupboard

Basic wire frame view from within Softimage|XSI

Base glass layer - All the glass is 100% clear and non-reflective. The pass below takes care of all the specular hilites. In fact there were no passes rendered with the standard phong specular. Hilites that you see in the image above are from a reflection map.

Hilite pass. This is additively keyed and tinted to create a 'real' specular.

Caustics only pass. This simulates the effect of light being refracted through glass and liquid and also reflected off the outer glass surface. Caustics are a rendering intensive element and would not be possible if not for massive advances in hardware processing power.

Shot glass only matte - This enables colour correction within the shot glasses without effecting the rest of the image.

Shadow only pass. This is an inverted representation of the shadow areas within the render. This was another pass that was setup and rendered for a safety factor that we could darken the shadow areas of the image and not effect the lighter areas.

Final composite. Motion blur has been applied in the composite using ReelSmart motion blur from revisionfx. Volumetric light has been added as has a live action dust layer to enhance the feeling of atmosphere within the scene.

Final composite. Again, volumetric light has been added to the scene and a dust layer to enhance the feeling of atmosphere.
